Electronic Controller |
If you've attended any of the major H.O. races across the country you've seen the top Pros using a two-knob electronic controller. Originally used extensively by the Pro H.O. racers in the Pacific-Northwest, the DR has now become the controller of choice for the serious H.O. racer across the Nation. |
| Just what is a DR Controller? It's an electronic controller that works a bit differently than your standard race set or popular Parma controller. These controllers use a fixed resistor value with the trigger allowing more voltage through as you pull the trigger. When using a Parma controller, you refer to the resistance value as ohms. The ohm rating is fixed at certain values, such as 15-ohms, or 25-ohms. Once you start taking racing a little more seriously you'll quickly realize the 45-ohm controller you used at home with your stock cars doesn't work so well on a larger club track with lots of power and stronger magnets. It's too sluggish. Soon you're carrying around a bag of controllers so you'll have the right resistance available when you need it. That's where the DR Electronic Controller comes in. The DR Controller will work with all your cars, be they a Box Stock, Super Stock, Modified, or Polymer car. It manages this by using what is termed as a "sensitivity" knob. By turning this dial, you can make the car more responsive or less responsive, depending on what you need or like. Along with this, there's a brake/coast circuit to make further adjustments possible. | ![]() |
| Take a look at the photo to the right and you'll see two knobs along with a toggle switch. The knob to the right is for sensitivity and the knob to the left, working in tandem with the toggle switch, makes up the brake/coast circuit. Flip the toggle to 'B' and the left knob will adjust how much brakes your car has. Flip the toggle to the middle position and it's as if your brake wire wasn't hooked up. When flipped to the 'C' position you now have a Coast circuit that has been activated. Coast is a small amount of current running through your controller at all times, even if you're not giving the car any power. Turn the left knob to adjust how much coast is available for your car. | ![]() |
| The photo to the right shows the "dual-polarity" switch
that comes standard on every DR controller. Club or commercial H.O. tracks will be wired either positive or negative depending on
which way the power leads are hooked up. This switch allows the controller to be used on
any H.O. track provided it's wired for a dynamic brake circuit (the red wire). Special note: a DR controller will only
work on a track that is wired with a dynamic brake (the red
wire) circuit. |
